Excavating on the eastern edge of the Hula Valley in northern Israel between 1999 and 2017 presented a series of literal and metaphorical landmines in the recovery of ancient materials and the encounter with modern socio/political realities.
A field archaeologist with decades of experience, Daniel Schowalter has been Director of Excavations at Horvat Omrit in Israel and at Mandeure in France and has excavated at Chersonesos on the Crimean Peninsula. He presently serves on the Governing Board of the Archaeological Institute of America.
The event is sponsored by the J.E. and Lillian Byrne Tipton Distinguished Visiting Professor in Catholic Studies Endowment in the Department of Religious Studies.
Prof. Daniel Schowalter is the Tipton Distinguished Visiting Professor in the Department of Religious Studies at UC Santa Barbara.
