Time Capsule: Senior Recital
Ivan Law is an African American Cellist from Los Angeles, California and is currently based in Santa Barbara, California. Having played for nine years, Ivan taught himself how to play the cello in 8th grade and currently attends the University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB) where he has studied with Jennifer Kloetzel for four years. In August, He will be moving to study with Dr. Erin Ellis at West Virginia University on scholarship. While at UCSB, Ivan has performed with various chamber groups including the UCSB Undergraduate Honors String Quartet. As a chamber musician, he has performed a wide variety of repertoire ranging from Classical to Contemporary including the works of Beethoven, Brahms, Schubert, Caroline Shaw and more. In August of 2022, he had the opportunity to perform in a string quartet quartet at the Kotor Art Festival in Kotor, Montenegro and at the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara; debuting 4 new works for String Quartet and performing two pieces by Joseph Haydn and Antonin Dvorak. Ivan has also performed in various orchestras in Santa Barbara in the UCSB Chamber Orchestra, Westmont College Orchestra, Santa Barbara Chamber Players Orchestra and the Santa Barbara Solstice Chamber Orchestra. Ivan has also collaborated with composition students at UCSB to create and debut new works for solo cello while a part of the UCSB Ensemble for Contemporary Music. While completing his undergraduate degree, Ivan has had the opportunity to play in masterclasses with world-renowned artists such as Yo-Yo Ma, Alisa Weilerstein, Sheku Kanneh-Mason, Isata Kanneh-Mason, Caroline Shaw, the Danish String Quartet, the Juilliard String Quartet, and the Attacca String Quartet.
