This exhibition documents the life’s work of Cedric J. Robinson and Elizabeth Peters Robinson, placing it in the global context of the Black radical tradition. The Robinsons were renowned for their seminal scholarship and activism that had wide-ranging influence at UC Santa Barbara (UCSB), in academia, and across many public arenas. The exhibition is drawn from the Cedric J. and Elizabeth P. Robinson Archive (“Robinson Archive”) and supplemented by a variety of materials from other collections in UCSB Library’s Special Research Collections, as well as personal contributions from Elizabeth Robinson.

A deeply influential educator, Cedric Robinson (1940-2016) was a well-known scholar of racial capitalism and the Black radical tradition, and an active participant in political movements, both at home and internationally. For more than 30 years, Elizabeth Robinson has been an educator, social worker, former associate director for media at KCSB-FM radio, activist, and community media producer.

With the 2024 acquisition of the Robinson Archive from Elizabeth Robinson and the Robinsons’ daughter Najda Ife Robinson-Mayer, the Library launched the Post-Custodial, Community-based and Participatory Archives Project. This initiative aims to establish a living archive at UCSB centered on the Black Radical Tradition and the broader field of Black Studies. The Robinson Archive serves as an important anchor for the larger project, and will enable global research, teaching, scholarship, and sociopolitical and cultural activism for future generations.

An installation by d’Achiardi challenges visitors’ understandings of fact and fiction through a generated experience with real and invented news headlines. Drawing on Buddhist and Hindu contemplative practices, Karthikeyan's expanded cinema installation explores ways in which moving images can model our subjective experience of consciousness. Handmade anthropomorphic animal masks and paintings by Aiello engage with queer and neurodivergent identities at the intersection of simulation, reality, and performance. Christofferson’s creation of new realities connects human design to nature through living spaces for animals and humans. Childress pairs digital sculpture with a reconstructed corn field to highlight the systemic forces of racism and related experiences of isolation within rural topographies. A full-scale grocery store aisle by Scott demonstrates how the physicality of barriers, like security glass in these spaces, spotlight the social and cultural policing of minoritized bodies. Farajiani exhibits three interrelated components: soft sculpture, video, and public artwork, located outside the museum. Her project speaks to embedded networks of resilience and memory, both in materials and collaborators on campus and the artist’s homeland of Iran. Fault lines, both metaphorical and material, disrupt our understanding of the nature of boundaries as impenetrable. Upon closer inspection, these apparent divides are invitations to transgress and generate anew.

Fault Lines is organized by the Art, Design & Architecture Museum and the Department of Art at UC Santa Barbara. Curatorial text is by Alida Jekabson, PhD candidate, and Kristin Yinger, PhD student, in the Department of History of Art and Architecture. Artist Biographies

Alexis Childress is a visual artist born in Illinois and received her BFA from Georgia State University. Inspired by Astro-Blackness, her work uses 2D and 3D digital sculpture and collage to explore Black American nationalism, systems of power, and the inception of a black identity framework within emerging techno-cultural assemblages, algorithms, and digital networks. Through a combination of installation and digital art, her work confronts the concept of constructed reality, creating worlds that become reflections of the broken systems of society.

Emily D’achiardi is an internet artist exploring the intersections of digital culture, memory, and intimacy. Emily received a BA in art history from Reed College and is currently pursuing an MFA at UC Santa Barbara. Emily creates digital works that use the browser as a site of memory, intimacy, and emotional residue. Her work foregrounds fragments, repetitions, and the quiet systems that script online feeling.”

Hope Christofferson works with nature to amplify human imagination. With a deep love for creative problem solving, she often looks at natural design and animal behavior to inform the work she makes. As an illustrator, her work stems from a hybrid source of transmutation and communication. Recently the California coastline has inspired a series of wondrously collaborative works that roam the shorelines of reality and dream, merging orchids, ferns, corals, and people into artworks that swim free in our shared fantasea.

KeyShawn Scott works across drawing and installation. His drawings celebrate Black culture while addressing Black experiences and challenging stereotypes. His installations critically engage with American education systems and the ways grocery store settings oversimplify complex systemic issues.

Negar Farajiani is a multimedia artist. Her thesis explores weaving as a social and embodied practice. Drawing on her experience as an artist, mother, and migrant, she approaches weaving not only as a material technique but also as a way of building community, memory, and resilience. With a focus on socially engaged art and networking, her work builds connections between individuals and communities. Through collective weaving, installation, and her essay film, the project creates temporary spaces for gathering and storytelling, both inside and outside the museum.

Tiffany Aiello’s thesis project explores the relationship between identity and nonhuman performance, using objects like puppets, costumes, masks and digital avatars as vessels for expression.

Vivek Karthikeyan is interested in reimagining moving image as a medium of phenomenological perception rather than visual storytelling. Drawing from disciplines including cognitive psychology, South Asian philosophy, and contemporary philosophy of mind, he creates immersive hybrid installations that combine traditional time-and-lens based video, sound, creative coding, and VR technology.

The program kicks off in winter with a book giveaway for UCSB students led by the Chancellor, Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost, and University Librarian, and culminates with a free public talk by the book’s author(s) at Campbell Hall in the spring. Throughout the winter and spring quarters, the Library sponsors a variety of free learning, experiential, and social events to explore the book’s themes. The selected book is also incorporated into the university curriculum for winter and spring, allowing students to explore its themes in an academic context. UCSB Reads is generously supported by many individuals, university departments, and organizations.

UCSB Reads has become a beloved campus tradition that brings together thousands of people every year and demonstrates the power of literature to bridge divides, promote intellectual engagement, and build community.

The Oak Group is one of the first artist groups in the U.S. to combine creativity with conservation. Since 1986, Oak Group artists have exhibited artworks painted on location to raise awareness and funds for open spaces, generating over $3 million in sales to support the preservation of lands for wildlife, recreation, ranching, and farming. The group includes 25 active members and has presented more than 100 exhibitions benefiting over 20 conservation organizations.

The Cheadle Center manages over 340 acres of open space between Ellwood Mesa and Goleta Slough, supporting habitat conservation, upland and wetland restoration, and sustainable stormwater management. These lands form a mosaic of oak woodland, coastal sage scrub, grassland, and wetland ecosystems that sustain high regional biodiversity. The Center also provides critical academic opportunities for UCSB students, including internships, field courses, and independent projects supported by the Research and Monitoring Mentorship Program.

Literary and visual artists have continuously adapted and reinterpreted them in various artforms. Musicians and choreographers have refashioned his stories into opera, ballet, pop songs, and modern dance. Meanwhile, filmmakers, television writers, and videogame creators have transformed them for modern screens. This exhibition explores the many forms and many afterlives of Shakespeare’s art – from a single scrap of his crabbed handwritten text to the digital media of the twenty-first century.

Infinite Variety was co-curated by David Gartrell, the Library’s Curator of Rare Books and Manuscripts, and Professor Jim Kearney, Department of English. The exhibition is on display in the Jackie Laskoff Exhibition Alcove, located in the Sara Miller McCune Arts Library (1st Floor, Mountain Side), and is co-sponsored by UCSB Library and the Department of English.

The Carsey-Wolf Center is excited to bring director Giuseppe Tornatore’s rarely-screened 2002 director’s cut of Cinema Paradiso to the Pollock Theater. In this more complex version of the film, Salvatore returns to Giancaldo to discover what he left behind, including a secret that was excised from the theatrical version of the film. The New York Times argued that the director’s cut is “more romantic, more emotional and ultimately more satisfying than the teary-eyed original. By adding 48 minutes to that two-hour release, and bringing back a character that had been deleted from it, the director’s cut sabotages the earlier version’s message, a variation of the old admonition that you can’t go home again.” An intimate coming-of-age story, a brooding rumination on the complexity of adulthood and adult decisions, and a touching reflection on cinema’s broader cultural role, Cinema Paradiso is one of the medium’s most heartfelt tributes to the collective experience of moviegoing.

This event will begin with a critical and historical introduction by Ross Melnick (Interim Dick Wolf Director of the Carsey-Wolf Center), who will discuss the film’s relationship to our yearlong programming series Connectivity. A reception in the Michael Douglas Lobby will follow the screening.

The Oak Group is one of the first artist groups in the U.S. to combine creativity with conservation. Since 1986, Oak Group artists have exhibited artworks painted on location to raise awareness and funds for open spaces, generating over $3 million in sales to support the preservation of lands for wildlife, recreation, ranching, and farming. The group includes 25 active members and has presented more than 100 exhibitions benefiting over 20 conservation organizations.

The Cheadle Center manages over 340 acres of open space between Ellwood Mesa and Goleta Slough, supporting habitat conservation, upland and wetland restoration, and sustainable stormwater management. These lands form a mosaic of oak woodland, coastal sage scrub, grassland, and wetland ecosystems that sustain high regional biodiversity. The Center also provides critical academic opportunities for UCSB students, including internships, field courses, and independent projects supported by the Research and Monitoring Mentorship Program.

This initiative aims to establish a living archive at UCSB centered on the Black Radical Tradition and the broader field of Black Studies. The Robinson Archive serves as an important anchor for the larger project, and will enable global research, teaching, scholarship, and sociopolitical and cultural activism for future generations.

Our May book is Star Shipped by Cat Sebastian, a contemporary, enemies-to-lovers romance about two actors on a popular sci-fi TV show who pretend to be friends for the public, leading to an unexpected road trip and a slow-burn romance. Books can be acquired through your local library, Libby/Hoopla, a local bookstore (Chaucer's), an audiobook provider, or your favorite online retailer. You do not have to finish the book to join us, as long as you don't mind spoilers!

Since 2008, a team of University of California alumni, students and friends have participated in an annual 10K charity race through the heart of central London. Run, walk, or skip with UC Alumni UK this year to support student scholarships!

By joining Team UC, you will pay a subsidised rate for entry and will fundraise for students in need at the University of California. Take a tour of the restoration and transformation of Lagoon Island and Campus Point from old agricultural fields and military structures to diverse native wildflowers, oak woodland, dunes and coastal sage scrub with Chris Berry '17, alumni and the Campus Lagoon Steward with UCSB's Cheadle Center for Biodiversity and Ecological Restoration (Cheadle Center). Tour will highlight recent removal of military era asphalt and a September prescribed burn.

Explore the UCSB Experimental Sedimentology Laboratory (aka Flume Lab). Learn how researchers use large-scale experiments and advanced technology to recreate natural processes like river movement, flooding, debris flows, and coastal change to better understand how landscapes form and how communities can better prepare for natural hazards. Our group also studies microplastic transport in rivers — work that is now shaping statewide standards for measuring microplastics in California waterways.
